How do I find a web designer for my job?

When searching for a web designer to create a website for your business it can be very important to pick a company or person that can do the job, on time and on budget.. There are many places to find web designers on the web. However you find them, be it through search engines, or searching award sites, or any other way, it is important that you follow a few simple rules when approaching them for hire.

It is always a good idea to know your budget up front. If you don’t have a clear idea of what your budget is, you will often get extremely varying price ranges for the same job. It is best to tell anybody you are considering hiring a ballpark price range up front. This way you don’t waste anybody’s time. Wasting a contractor/designer’s time can be a good way to set a bad tone for any future work you do with him.

You also should do some research before you jump right in. The more you know from the beginning, the better. For instance, if you are looking to have a site created that will have a store section, and a forum section, you should specify that there will be backend programming, and most likely database connectivity. The more information you give up front, the better your chances of finding a designer with an accurate quote and time range.

It is also wise to find a design company that can handle all of the functionality and design elements in-house. The fewer hands you have working on your project, the better. With multiple groups of people working on your project you tend to have delays and a lag in communication. You will also have to ‘teach’ more people your project and design ideas, and that can become very cluttered.

Since your site will most likely be an important front for your business for a fair amount of time it is important that your site is future compatible. With an official web standard guideline, it is now possible to make a site completely future-compatible, and mostly past-compatible without losing much, if any, of the important things your site can’t do without such as branding and functionality. When talking with a prospect designer, ask him some questions about what techniques and languages he uses to make websites. There are buzzwords you should be listening for. Most people will tell you it is XHTML compliant, or they might explain, to you, how their process optimizes websites in order to have the biggest viewing audience. This would include most old browsers, up to Netscape Navigator 4.0, as well as future browsers and all resolutions. If prospects don’t explain this to you, ask.. If they don’t know what you are talking about or they don’t consider these things when creating your site ‘x-out’ their company name from your list, and grill the next one.

Flash, for the most part will be future compatible, although users need a plug-in to use sites created with it. As of right now the most trendy and efficient way to create the front-end for a website is with XHTML, and CSS. This ensures small file-sizes, with easy and quick edits for most things. This will surely save you money on your server and on updates you will have to make to the site.

The most important aspect of the contractor/client relationship is communication. This breeds a friendly atmosphere which will make it easy to depend on and work with your designer.
