As with any business, web hosts need to treat their customers well if they want to stay in business and to earn the loyalty of customers. Some web hosts do this well, others make mistakes than can cost them customers and ruin their reputation.

Uptime as close to 100% as possible is critical for web hosts to offer and maintain. Occasional, short periods of downtime are acceptable but measures should be taken to avoid downtime of any length. Uptime is especially important to business websites. If a website is down, a company can lost potential clients and even sales. A web host should have the software, staff and equipment they need to maintain nearly perfect uptime.

Web hosts need to make sure that their motivation for profit does not affect the quality of service they offer customers. Web hosts should not put too many websites on a single server. This can affect the performance of the websites and that is not fair to the hosting clients.

A hosting provider must also provide quality customer service. Customers should be able to easily reach customer and technical support when they have technical, billing or other questions and concerns. Some web hosts offer a variety of ways to reach customer care. This is good business especially if they offer 24/7 customer care by qualified individuals. Any inquiries a hosting customer has should be responded to as quickly as possible.

It is also important that if a host is experiencing problems, that they contact their customers. A host should notify customers if there is a problem and assure them they are working to solve the problem as quickly as possible. Web hosts should also keep their customers updated to let them know if they will be performing any maintenance or updates that could briefly affect service.

A hosting company should deliver what they promise. For example if they advertise 24/7 technical assistance, they need to offer 24/7 technical assistance. If a host promises new features will be added on a specific date, they should be available on that date. Just as hosts expect customers to uphold their end of the agreement between host and customer, so must the host fulfill their end of the agreement.

Providing quality customer care and reliable service will increase the probability of a web hosting company establishing a successful business. If a web host does not treat a customer well or breaks their own terms of the agreement, the customer should find a new host.
